Harvest Moon is a series where the modern versions of the game have mostly been made for phones. Recently, one of those games was ported from mobile: Harvest Moon: Home Sweet Home. The newest game in the series, Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea, was developed with consoles in mind this time around. I was able to join a press event to get a closer look at the game, so let’s dive into it!
Premise of Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea
Your character lives in the world of Teradea, where villages are spread across the open world and protected by guardian spirits. Things quickly take a turn as disaster after disaster strikes, and you are asked by the Harvest Goddess to help as she attempts to get in contact with the guardian spirits throughout Teradea. She wants to figure out what happened and why the spirits are no longer guarding their respective locations.
Not only are you traveling to these villages to help them deal with these disasters, but you are also there to help rebuild them afterward. You do that through the familiar Harvest Moon gameplay loop by constructing buildings, creating farms, restoring crops, and gathering farm animals to help provide more resources to the villages.

When you are helping construct and rebuild these villages, there are a few things to note. Buildings now have levels ranging from one through three, and higher levels allow you to do more with each building. Farming equipment also has levels, with higher-level equipment covering larger areas. Watering cans, for example, can water more squares of farmland while using less stamina.
There are also a variety of farm animals you can have on your farms, including camels. You still have the usual cows, chickens, and horses, but you can also have animals such as reindeer. During the gameplay presentation, Natsume also showed off the new pre-order bonuses: Mooberry, a pink cow that produces strawberry milk, and Moonana, a yellow cow that produces banana milk. Mooberry is offered as a digital pre-order bonus for Nintendo Switch and Steam, while Moonana is available as a pre-order bonus for Xbox and PlayStation.

Horses, reindeer, and camels can be assigned to your mount whistle, allowing you to use them to travel across Teradea. There are also smaller animals, such as cats and dogs, that can accompany you and provide buffs. Two that were shown were the Calico Cat and the Bernese Dog. Petting the Calico Cat can restore some of your energy, while the Bernese Dog can help calm down animals, making them much easier to approach. Wild animals can also be tamed by interacting with them and getting them to like you.
The Areas
During the gameplay presentation, the first area introduced to us was Bloomfield. The goal during this portion of the game was to deliver a bottle of hot milk to the guardian of Wolf Hill. The player needed a horse to get past a certain area before taking the milk to Lupo, a wolf spirit who serves as the guardian of Wolf Hill. The team at Natsume Inc. explained that certain obstacles can prevent you from reaching parts of a region unless you have upgraded items or specific animals available to help with traversal.
AdvertisementTo keep the open world engaging and add more importance to the villages, there will also be objectives to complete. The next village the team showed off was Tidewind. While Bloomfield is a forested area, Tidewind has more of a beachfront setting. There is also Quarrytop, which is more mountainous. The final area we were shown was not a village, but a town called Maplehill. Maplehill has a more old-fashioned, classical look. Each region also has several outfits that you can equip on your character.
There are also statues you can find throughout the open world. By finding and interacting with these power statues, you can unlock power sprites. These power sprites can then be used to unlock skills, while power wisps can be used at the statue of the Harvest Goddess to upgrade them. Sometimes, you will need to complete specific tasks before a statue can be unlocked. For example, during the gameplay preview, the player character had to take a selfie while using a specific expression near a power statue in order to activate it.

There are caves you can explore in Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea, and these caves contain ore that you can mine. This means ore is not restricted to dedicated mining areas. To help you explore deeper into caves, there is also a lantern you can acquire, which is new to the series. The team at Natsume Inc. also made sure to point out that every animal in the game can be befriended, although some require more effort than others.
Marriage also returns in this game, with a total of 10 marriage candidates: five bachelors and five bachelorettes. There is one bachelor and one bachelorette in each region. You will be able to keep track of your relationships through the heart system. Normal villagers and friends can reach up to three hearts, while marriage candidates can reach four. As expected for the series, you can build stronger relationships by giving gifts and spending time with characters.
Your house in each region is also customizable and expandable. You can create items for your house using the workbench, including vases, flowerpots, pictures, and even snow sculptures. There will be no difficulty modes, as the game is designed to simply be Harvest Moon. You can also cook and eat food that provides buffs. Coffee, for example, gives you the ability to stay awake past midnight. Otherwise, once midnight hits, your character will become exhausted and need to go to bed.

My Thoughts
I am excited to see what a modern Harvest Moon can look like when it is built for consoles instead of with mobile phones in mind. Home Sweet Home wasn’t bad, but it felt limited. I am looking forward to meeting all of the marriage candidates, and I am definitely excited about being able to ride reindeer. There is a good chunk of things to be excited about with this upcoming release.
