Resident Evil Officially Returns October 30 With 30th Anniversary Event

2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise, and to mark the occasion, Capcom is hosting a special event in Japan, where fans can experience the horrors of the game first-hand in special exhibits.

1996 was one of the best years in video game history, seeing the release of Pokémon Red & Green, Super Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot, Dead or Alive, Soul Blade, and Tomb Raider. This was also the year when Resident Evil, known as Biohazard in Japan, launched on the original PlayStation in all regions. Resident Evil quickly popularized the survival horror genre, where people found thrills in facing evil with only a limited number of bullets and healing items, carefully picking their fights if they wished to see the credits.

Resident Evil 30th Anniversary Exhibition Coming To Shibuya

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Resident Evil, Capcom is holding the "THE WORLD OF BIOHAZARD 30th Anniversary" event at Tokyo's Shibuya BEAM Gallery from Friday, October 30, 2026, to Thursday, December 24, 2026. According to Openers, the tickets will cost 3,300 yen per adult, which is roughly $21 USD, with pre-orders open now.

Sadly, there's no word regarding an international version of the 30th anniversary event, though it's not necessarily off the cards. It's possible the exhibits could be brought to a major convention, though likely not until next year, as the Shibuya event doesn't conclude until December.

The Horrors Of Resident Evil Will Be Brought To Life At The 30th Anniversary Exhibition

So, what's actually at the Resident Evil 30th anniversary exhibit? There's the usual exclusive merchandise seen at similar events, but the real reason to visit is for the horror-themed attractions. There are sections based on the T-Virus from the original Resident Evil, which led to the zombies that took over the Spencer Mansion, and later, Raccoon City. This is followed by a section based on the Las Plagas Parasite, which created the monsters that Leon faced in Resident Evil 4.

For the modern era of Resident Evil, there's also an area focused on the mold that created monsters in the later games. As there's a section based on Resident Evil Village, Capcom featured a life-sized statue of Lady Dimitrescu, for all the perfectly normal people to appreciate.

It's not just Lady Dimitrescu who has been recreated for the exhibit, as there's also a life-sized Leon Kennedy statue, who appears in an area devoted to the Resident Evil protagonists. To cap off the trip, visitors can purchase exclusive merchandise, including a Tofu bath tub toy, and slippers based on the Lickers from Resident Evil 2.

A trip to Tokyo is a big ask for international Resident Evil fans, but it looks like Capcom is pulling out all the stops for the event, with amazing replicas of some of the series' most iconic heroes and villains. Anyone planning a trip to Japan could easily fit a trip to the exhibition into their itinerary, especially as Shibuya has no shortage of cool things for nerds to enjoy.
